Media Education

Filmmaking and Animation workshops

Today’s media culture is perceived as a force in society that has the capacity to inform children’s lives in many ways.

Media, such as television, film, magazines and advertising are communicative forms that have the ability to influence audiences with the messages they convey and can have both a positive and negative impact on children's perceptions.

The Media Max programme is an invaluable area of media education, an innovative informal educational programme for children aged 6 - 12 years.

Media Max uses digital video production and digital drama as a tool to enable children to understand the processes and techniques employed in creating moving-image media and in developing media literacy, in other words, the knowledge needed to critically analyse, evaluate and challenge the range of ‘messages’ the media may produce. Media education develops children’s understanding of how media ‘messages’ are produced and is an essential element of children’s social learning.

The Media Max programme encourages children to take advantage of the potential of the media as a means of communication and self-expression.

Media Max aims to:

  • Provide safe play opportunities that enable children aged 6 – 12 years to experiment with and explore communication and representation through media production.

  • Provide new experiences for children to gain media literacy through critical engagement and creative challenges.

  • Provide opportunities to access and gain practical experience of media production.

  • Broaden children’s perceptions of media culture by providing an understanding and awareness of behind the scenes practical experience.

  • Empower children to become active producers in their own right and represent themselves in ways they would like to be represented.
